In 2020, Rebecca and Ryan Bellmore received the news that no parent ever wants to hear: their one-year-old daughter, Amelia, had cancer.

The Bellmore family lived in Alaska and had to travel near and far for Amelia to be treated by different doctors.

When she was just seven months old, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and went through multiple rounds of chemotherapy before doctors told her that she would need a bone marrow transplant in order to survive.

Although Amelia’s older sister was a match, doctors suggested that her donor be outside of the family to ensure the transplant’s success.

Enter Shawen Bueckers, a nursing student in her senior year at Brigham Young University. Bueckers was just a freshman at the time and decided to register herself as a bone marrow donor through Be the Match. She never thought she would receive that call that she was a match for someone, but in 2021, her phone rang.

Without hesitation, Bueckers agreed to donate her bone marrow to help the one-year-old.

Her selfless decision ended up saving Amelia’s life, and Amelia received Bueckers’ bone marrow the day after her second birthday.

Bueckers eventually wrote a letter to the Bellmores, who were extremely emotional upon reading it. They wished more than anything that they could have a relationship with the woman who saved their daughter’s life, and this past week, their wish came true.

Bueckers and the Bellmores finally met in person for the first time, and Bueckers selfless act even inspired Amelia’s dad to register as a bone marrow donor.

Thankfully, Amelia is recovering well and her cancer is now in remission.
