People find their true purpose by taking various paths. Life isn’t always a straight road — most times, you have to reroute and change your plans. A particular event will be the major turning point in your life. In Denise Johnson’s case, it was her breast cancer journey. She did not expect to take a line of career far from her previous one. Denise just knew that she had to do it — she had to make it possible. While recovering from breast cancer, an epiphany washed over her. From her accounting career, she is now thriving in the field of nursing.
Photo: Youtube/NewsNationIn an interview with Morning in America, the breast cancer survivor shared how she came up with a significant realization in life. Her family went through hurdles in terms of health — she and her siblings were cancer victims. Denise fought cancer in 2015 and was able to reevaluate her life. Her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer as well, and her brother with prostate cancer. It was truly overwhelming for the family, and this led her to nursing.
“Before I got cancer, I had been working two full-time jobs — had been in a lot of prayer about how to find some balance in my life,” Johnson recalled. “I know a lot of women have that struggle and just the forced time to sit, and think and not be able to work allowed me to really think about what I was doing with my life.”

She then quit her job and pursued nursing school. Denise felt like she had to do something to help and share hope with cancer patients. Nothing could stop her from making this change — she even applied for a student loan to finally start her journey. But a massive shift in life is not easy, especially switching careers from accounting to nursing.
“You can do it. That’s my advice. Absolutely. I had a patient the other day sitting there saying, ‘Wow, that was really great that you became a nurse; you must have done this for a long time.’ I said, ‘No, it’s recent for me.’ And she’s like, wow, I couldn’t do that,” Denise shared.
Denise is a real inspiration, and she has now been an Oncology nurse for almost a year. She took a huge leap of faith and did not mind all the uncertainties. May she also serve as your inspiration — find your purpose in the difficulties you face in life. Denise found her reason in the service of cancer care and treatment with the hope that other cancer patients would fight the battle until the disease is completely cured.
