When Katelyn Samples welcomed her new baby home in 2020, she was overjoyed with having another normal, healthy pregnancy and child.

The family was settling into their Roswell, Georgia home with baby Locklan when they started to notice something interesting. As the time passed, Locklan’s jet black hair slowly started to turn white-blonde, frail, and frizzy.

It’s normal for baby hair to change as they age, but there was something different about Locklan’s hair. They just couldn’t put their finger on it.

Speaking of his hair in an interview with PEOPLE, Samples said, “We were like, ‘Huh, what is this? We knew it was different, but didn’t know exactly how. And then it kept growing and growing.”

As Locklan’s hair grew, it wouldn’t smooth down with a comb. Because it’s so frizzy and thin, his hair sticks up in all directions.

Speaking with Fox5 Atlanta, Samples shared that Locklan’s blonde, fine hair makes people stop and whisper wherever they go. Many people even approach them and ask to touch it!

Naturally, people on social media were also curious about his hair and that’s what sparked answers into his unusual ‘do. According to PEOPLE, someone sent Samples a message asking if they’d had Locklan diagnosed with Uncombable Hair Syndrome. According to WebMD, UHS is a rare condition in which one’s hair is dry and frizzy and can’t be combed flat. There are only around 100 documented cases of it.

Because it’s so rarely documented, Locklan’s doctors were skeptical that he had the condition, but they sent samples in for testing per Samples’ request.

When the results came back, it turned out Samples’ suspicions were correct. Locklan’s hair had the tell-tale triangular shape at the root that people with UHS have. Thankfully, it only affects his hair and isn’t medically significant.

Having such a unique hair case, Samples quickly took to Instagram and created an account to show off her son’s frizzy locks. Since his hair sometimes makes people smile in real life, she’s hoping to get the same reaction from it virtually.
