Two thieves who ran out of a supermarket with a trolley full of groceries and wine were stopped by a worker in the car park leading to a wild brawl.

Footage of the struggle shows the worker fighting for the trolley outside a Countdown in Silverdale, north of Auckland, about 1pm on Sunday.

A witness told the New Zealand Herald one of the women had filled a trolley with wine, chips and crackers inside the grocer before making a beeline for the exit where the other woman was waiting.

When confronted by the worker outside the store, the women yelled obscenities and grabbed at the items in the trolley.

The worker managed to save most of the goods, including several bottles of wine, but had her phone stolen during the altercation.

Fortunately the phone was later recovered by bystanders who briefly stopped the women and found it on the ground.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage to find the women responsible for the ‘significant theft’.

‘This was a brazen theft and the offenders’ attitude towards supermarket staff was one of entitlement and aggression,’ Senior Sergeant Roger Small said.

When approached for comment by the Herald, Countdown said the matter is with police.

The incident is only the latest in a series of violent attacks against supermarket employees.

Popular NZ grocer Foodstuffs said burglary, assault and robbery has gone up by 36 per cent in its stores compared to last year.

‘Our grocers have never seen retail crime at these levels. It’s an extremely concerning trend and it’s unacceptable,’ chief executive of Foodstuffs North Island Chris Quin said.
