A Florida teen made it her mission to walk at her high school graduation one month after a car accident that left her with a plethora of health issues.

Khalia Carter, of Fort Myers, Florida, was driving home when a motorcycle operated by a drunk driver rammed into the back of her car, sending it into a ditch.

“I felt a big crash and my car was spinning and I couldn’t control it. I couldn’t control the wheel. I couldn’t press the gas or the brake. Nothing was working,” Carter told ABC News. “After that, I got out the car and I just started screaming once it stopped.”

The accident left her with a traumatic brain injury, a mobility disorder, speech impairment, and post-traumatic stress disorder, among a lot of other issues.

But despite every thing she’s been through, she remained focused on getting better and went through several therapies including occupational and physical therapy as well as speech therapy.

The one thing she was determined most to achieve was not only attending her high school graduation, but walking on the stage to receive her diploma.

“After I was getting stronger every day, I decided, maybe it’d be surprising if I shocked everybody and walked across the stage and why not?” she told ABC News. “So I pushed every day as hard as I can and gave 110% every day at therapy, to try to be able to walk across the stage.”

Carter achieved her goal of walking at graduation and will continue her therapies.

The 18-year-old plans on attend Georgia Southern University in the fall to study journalism or education.
