Chris Montana owns the first black-owned distillery in the United States, Du Nord Social Spirits, and is using his business to make a big impact in his community.

But getting to this point has not been easy for him.

Montana grew up homeless in Minneapolis, and spent many years couch surfing and sleeping in people’s basements.

Eventually, a friend’s family told him to stay with them for a few weeks. A few weeks turned into the rest of his high school years and the family eventually adopted Montana.

He went on to pursue a career in politics and law, but always had a passion for brewing beer. He went to conferences, learned the science behind it, and managed to build a successful business with his wife, Shanelle, in the same neighborhood he grew up in as a homeless teen.

“We want to change the rooms, open the doors and help people who have not traditionally held power see how we can make it in this business, this town, this life, this world,” they wrote on their website.

In addition to his distillery business, he also created the Du Nord Foundation, where they address social justice through economic justice, wealth and prosperity.

One of the initiatives of the foundation is the Community Market, which addresses their community’s hunger crisis and provides economic stability. The market offers high quality food and household supplies to those in need at no cost to them.
