A dad was having a pool session with his 10-year-old twins along with one of their friends in their backyard pool one day when things took a sudden turn.
Brett Hassig, the dad, was doing underwater breathing exercises when he suddenly lost consciousness.
“I went from, just, complete peace, saying the Lord’s prayer, and then everything was just white,” said Brett, “I just blacked out. It seemed normal, and then just nothing.”

“I noticed that he wasn’t okay, because he was lying on his side and his face was starting to turn blue,” said Christian, one of the twins.
They wanted to call 911, but the boys were unable to unlock their dad’s phone, so Christian went to get help and ran to their neighbor’s house, only to find that they weren’t home at the time. When he saw a car driving by, he chased it down, running as fast as he could, to ask for help.

The other twin, Bridon, started CPR without actually knowing how to perform the maneuver, with the help of their friend, Sam, who assisted Bridon by checking Brett’s pulse and heartbeat. The untrained boy only did what he had seen on TV, and it saved his dad’s life. The dad gained consciousness even before help arrived at the scene.
Bridon said in their interview with Today that while he was saving his dad’s life, a lot of thoughts went through his head.
“I’ve had some moments with him. Happy, sad, and some mad moments, and I don’t want this to be the last moment,” he said while looking at his dad.
He recalled the moment his dad regained consciousness and described how his dad started spitting out foam and water and that he started making some noises while Sam immediately asked the dad for his current status, asking him if he was okay and if he was able to hear them.
Still crying from all that was happening, Bridon wanted the medics to take their dad to the hospital, as he thought that maybe he still had water in his lungs. Remember that these boys are not even teenagers yet. To have the presence of mind to even think about that possibly fatal chance that the dad might still have some water in his lungs is incredibly amazing.
The family decided to get CPR training after the ordeal and now advocates for swimming safety.

“There’s no way that, physically, they should have been able to pull a 185-pound man out of the water like that. And to know and do what all of them did, perfectly, quickly, with no lack of action, to run as fast as they did, God’s hand was all over it,” Brett said.
