Massachusetts State Police responded to a call of a man threatening to commit suicide and were able to save his life, thanks to the kind actions of a state trooper.

According to a Facebook post shared by the police, the man had made his way to the Tobin Bridge and had crossed the barrier.

He was contemplating jumping from the edge of the bridge, and the police had limited time to save his life. Trooper Paul O’Connor was one of the officers to respond to the call.

O’Connor, accompanied by Sergeant Peter Sennott and Trooper Randy Roach, used their training to establish trust and communication with the man. Saying the right or wrong things could be the difference between life and death in a situation like this.

Thankfully, after around 30 minutes of persuasion, the man agreed to climb back over the barrier and joined the officers on the road-side of the bridge. While they could’ve simply detained him and held him until EMS arrived, Trooper O’Connor went the extra mile and sat with the distraught man and talked with him until the ambulance arrived.

A photo was snapped of the two sitting together and it shows the intensity of the situation and how well O’Connor stepped up to the plate.

The man was transported to a hospital in Boston for evaluation, and O’Connor is now being praised as a hero for saving his life.

The department ended the Facebook post, saying: “We wish [the man] recovery and a safe and healthy future.”
