Police called to the scene found gunshot victims and started to help them before hearing more shots. Some officers rushed victims to hospitals while others ran toward the gunfire and chased the firing suspect.

Staff Inspector Ernest Ransom, the homicide unit commander, said witness interviews and video indicated that the suspect went to several locations in a ski mask and body armor, carrying an AR-15-style rifle.

‘The suspect then began shooting aimlessly at occupied vehicles and individuals on the street as they walked,’ he said.

The vehicles included a mother driving her 2-year-old twins home – one of whom was shot four times in the legs and the other who was hit in the eyes by shattered glass.

Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said the ‘armed and armored individual’ was firing ‘seemingly at random.’

Cornered in an alley, the suspect surrendered and was found to have not only the rifle but also a pistol, extra magazines, a police scanner and a bulletproof vest, police said.

Lashyd Merritt

Lashyd Merritt, 22, had just stepped out of his house to go to the local store for food when he was gunned down by the suspect on Monday night.

‘You took my son. You took my baby… you didn’t have to do what you did,’ Marie Merritt told ABC6 News. ‘You need to rot. You need to rot in jail. You need to because that was wrong.’

Lashyd’s mother said her message to the gunman is clear.

‘You didn’t have to do what you did. Whatever thoughts, whatever was going on in your head, you should’ve gotten help. You should leave people alone and get some help,’ she said.

‘I don’t understand why people just – whatever anger they have within themselves – I don’t understand why someone in the neighborhood would have that type of stuff, like guns – I don’t understand that,’ she said. ‘And you’re just taking good people away.’

Merritt described her son as a good kid who loved his job, his girlfriend and nieces and nephews. He went to West Philadelphia’s Overbrook High School before starting work at the IRS as a service representative.

Nashaya Thomas revealed her 15-year-old son Daujan Brown was trying to help his 13-year-old friend who had been shot in the legs when he was shot and killed.

Daujan Brown, 15, was the youngest victim of the deadly massacre.

‘His friend was hurt and he was trying to get his friend help but the guy was still in the act of doing his thing,’ Brown’s mother, Nashaya Thomas, NBC10.

‘He was just trying to get his friend help not knowing that bullets don’t have no name.’

His friend survived.

‘He lost his life trying to do a selfless act, and that’s how he was when he was here.’ Thomas said.

‘There was no way you could meet Daujan, have a conversation with him and not fall in love with him.’

Thomas also had a message for her son’s killer.

‘You shot towards children, innocent children that had nothing to do with anything. My son happened to be one people to get killed,’ she said.

She shook her finger at the camera and added ‘I hope you get everything you deserve.’

Ralph Moralis, 59, was planning to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding just days after he was shot to death, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

‘He did well by his family. He was a regular dude, a good person. He’s really going to be missed,’ Moralis’ former partner Tamika Veney told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

She described him as a family man who was looking forward to his daughter’s wedding this coming weekend.

Wamah’s twin sister Josephine spoke at the press conference on Wednesday and described her brother as a talented artist with a beautiful smile.

Dymir Stanton

He described Dymir as a ‘good person’ who came over to his aunt’s house to help out nearly everyday.

‘He was friendly, he got along with everybody,’ he said.

Dymir worked several jobs to support his family including as an Uber and grocery delivery driver.
