Spring 2023: New Insulin Delivery Device Options Available in the USA

Breaking diabetes-related news last week included an announcement from Insulet Corporation that Omnipod GO is now Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved.

In the US there are now three options available for wearable insulin patch delivery devices.

Insulin patch devices are easy to use, provide a convenient method for dosing insulin, and are a good option for people who do not want a “traditional” smart pump, don’t require very small or very large doses of insulin, or who may not have adequate insurance coverage for a traditional insulin pump.

Let’s take a closer look at the available insulin patch devices now available in the US!

Omnipod GO

Omnipod-GO

Omnipod GO

Omnipod GO is a 3-day wear insulin patch that delivers basal (background) insulin doses of rapid-acting insulin only.

  • The patch can hold and deliver enough insulin to deliver 10 to 40 units of insulin slowly over 24 hours a day for 3 days.
  • It can be loaded with 30-120 units of insulin for 3 days.
  • There are 7 different pre-set basal rates available.
  • According to Insultet’s Investors website, it “has been cleared for use with the following U-100 insulins: NovoLog®, Fiasp®, Humalog®, Admelog®, and Lyumjev®.”

People with Type 2 Diabetes who do not require mealtime insulin, or people with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes who take Afrezza (inhaled insulin), could benefit from Omnipod GO.

CeQur Simplicity

CeQur Simplicity

CeQur Simplicity

CeQur Simplicity is a 3-day wear insulin patch that delivers mealtime (bolus) doses only.

  • It requires a simultaneous 2-button squeeze to get a “click” worth of 2 units of insulin.
  • CeQur requires a minimum of 100 units and holds a maximum of 200 units.
  • It requires 20 units for priming, so there are 80-180 units available for bolus doses.

People who need to deliver mealtime insulin doses conveniently and discreetly may benefit from CeQur Simplicity.

V-GO

V-GO

V-GO

V-Go is a 24-hour wear insulin patch that can deliver basal insulin doses and can be used to deliver mealtime (bolus) insulin doses.

  • V-Go comes in 3 options: 20, 30, or 40 units of basal, plus up to 36 units of mealtime insulin.
  • The mealtime insulin is delivered when the wearer pushes the delivery button to receive 2 units per “click.”
  • V-Go 20 holds 20 units of basal to deliver 0.83 units per hour of basal insulin.
  • V-Go 30 holds 30 units of basal to deliver 1.25 units per hour of basal insulin.
  • V-Go 40 holds 40 units of basal to deliver 1.67 units per hour of basal insulin.

Someone who requires basal (background) and bolus (mealtime) insulin may benefit from V-Go. V-Go may be a good option for someone who does not want to use a traditional insulin pump but does want a more convenient and discreet delivery option for both basal and bolus insulin.
