Her 66-year-old brother’s stay in the Michigan treatment center ended last week after he reportedly ripped out his feeding and breathing tubes, leading to his death Sunday.
Anthony had been staying at the rehab center as he tried to recover from years of alcohol abuse, but insiders said he passed away after knowing ‘the consequences of removing the equipment’, according to TMZ.
Following news of his death, Madonna, 64, took to Instagram to pay tribute to her late sibling, where she said he ‘planted many important seeds’ in her path to success.

He battled alcoholism and homelessness for years, facing numerous run-ins with the law while his younger sister conquered the charts.
Her fame reportedly left him fiercely bitter, and over the years he has hit out at her for ‘turning her back on him’ and claiming she ‘never loved him’ in a series of scathing interviews.
Despite their sibling rivalry putting the duo at odds, Madonna’s family was by Anthony’s bedside during his final days while his multi-millionaire sister forked out for his care.
The two grew up with three other siblings in the Detroit suburbs, where their ‘sibling rivalry’ led Anthony to remark that they ‘hated each other’ from a young age.
Although she moved to New York in 1978 to pursue dance and embarked on what would become hugely successful career, he stayed largely in Michigan. Anthony was for a time employed at his father’s winery between his stints on the streets, but he was fired after he couldn’t keep his alcoholism under control.
During decades of fending off his family’s assistance, he continued to be homeless or spent time in temporary accommodation, until the family eventually stepped in and helped him receive treatment.
The singer’s decision to pay for her brother comes despite their self-described ‘sibling rivalry’ putting the two on very different paths, which was worsened by the death of their mother when he was just seven.
While the singer, who was five at the time of the tragedy, said her mother’s passing was the ‘motivating force’ behind her rise to superstardom, their mother’s death sent Anthony spiraling.
He became a father in 1993, but after he was ultimately barred from seeing his son when he and his partner split six years later, it was said to have driven him ‘insane’.

Anthony’s subsequent descent into heavy drinking meant he struggled to hold down a job. And with no money and nowhere to live, his persistent media appearances further fractured his relationship with his family.
As Madonna packed stadiums and enjoyed sold-out tours that amassed her an $850 million net worth, Anthony repeatedly told the press that he had been left on the sidelines.
Madonna’s consistent offers to pay for his treatment were reportedly turned down over the years, until his recent stretch in Michigan rehab ended in tragedy while she footed the bill.
However, while he ultimately reconnected with his parents and agreed to seek help for his alcoholism in 2017, it is unknown how he left things with his sister before his death.
Following the news of his passing, the star took to Instagram to pay her respects and fondly recall her memories of him.
