Searching for information vaccination certificate formats in the EU, I came across this page from the Luxembourg government where Thibault Milan, a user experience expert, has created a simple, open source program that allows people to scan a digital EU COVID certificate with their smartphones (or use the screenshot of the one he already had) and store it in their passbook, with all the data processing done on the device itself and without having to send any information to a remote server. It works with Apple Wallet on the iPhone and other programs of the same type on Android — I tested it with PassAndroid, but there are others.
I’ve found it a simple and practical way to keep my vaccination certificate handy on my device, rather than the usual screenshot, which involves searching through photos or files, or using the paper printout I was given at the vaccination center, which by now looks like a pirate treasure map. The process involves reading the QR code of your vaccination certificate (printed or already in digital format on your device), extracting and analyzing the information using the Europe eHealth Network Digital Covid Certificate Payload, and generating a file compatible with common e-wallet applications, to which it adds a blue background and the twelve stars logo. Finally, since Apple has designed its wallet-passes (the format of the cards you put in your Apple Wallet) very securely, and they must be signed to be visible in the Apple Wallet application, the developer has implemented this function through a web service that signs a summary of the data, not the data itself, in its memory.
It’s the simplest way to have your vaccination certificate to hand, in the same place where we already carry plane or train tickets, so that it can be displayed when needed. Something that should be required not only for traveling, but for practically any activity that involves coming into close contact with other people, even though in some places the authorities still haven’t made it a legal requirement to do something that would help protect everyone.
