These are the tragic scenes as hundreds of tourists stood around a harbour watching a baby bottlenose dolphin die before their eyes.

Dozens of people filmed the final moments of the animal, which was unable to find its way back to sea in St Ives, Cornwall.

According to The Mirror, witnesses claimed the dolphin lost sight of its pod and got trapped behind a sandbar.

One witness said the scenes were ‘heartbreaking’, while others said the young mammal was ‘swimming round and round but not getting anywhere’.

Despite efforts of a rescue, the dolphin died a short time later after getting stranded on sand

As the water level dropped during the ebb tide, young children, who realised what was happening, became visibly distressed.

A number of people were involved in a rescue attempt, but they were unable to coax the dolphin to deeper water.
