TRIVIA TIME!

Last month we asked: What is the official name of the “primevil” finger-lancing device affectionately known as “the guillotine”?

ANSWER: THE AUTOLET. This may explain why glucose levels sometimes drop during intense mental work, multi-tasking and social interactions.

CONGRATS TO: Cora von Hampeln for being the first person with the correct answer. Cora has lived with T1D for 57 years and received a pancreas transplant 14 years ago.

Fingersticks have never been “pleasant” whether one uses the guillotine or a modern lancing device. However, the process can be completely painless if done properly. My advice: Use a very thin lancet (33 gauge or higher) and set the lancing device for the lowest possible depth setting. Press firmly against the sides of the fingers (avoid the thumb and index fingers), and “milk” the finger after pricking the skin. If it really hurts after doing it this way, you can punch in the arm the next time you see me.

NEW QUESTION:

At a recent IDS Holiday gathering, we learned a lot of interesting things about our fellow IDS teammates.

For example, not one but TWO of our esteemed clinicians wanted to be marine biologists when they were back in grade school.

Who were they???
