Kevin Stokes, of Arkansas, has been growing out his dreadlocks for ten years, but he didn’t hesitate to shave them all off if it meant making his daughter feel better.

This past March, when his daughter, Nova, was just nine months old, her parents noticed that she was not acting herself one evening. She was extremely tired and her stomach seemed swollen, so they brought her to the emergency room.

It was there that they received the devastating news that they never expected to hear: Nova was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that affects young children’s nerve cells.

Nova began receiving treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, and started her first round of chemotherapy in April.

Like most people who receive chemotherapy, Nova began losing her hair.

That’s when Stokes decided to do something to support her and help her know she wasn’t alone. He shaved of all of his hair for the first time in more than a decade.

Everyone knows Stokes for his long locks, and it was always something that meant a lot to him. But after seeing his daughter go through this, he knew shaving his head was the right thing to do.

“I decided that I would cut my hair to support her and also bring awareness to neuroblastoma,” he told Good Morning America. “Because everybody always asks me, ‘Why did you cut your hair? Why did you cut your hair?’ and that gives me a chance to explain to them what we’re going through and her diagnosis and her specific cancer.”
