A US team has been given a grant to develop a new generation of biosynthetic lubricants that have the potential to treat arthritis and reduce the painful friction of artificial joints.

In addition to treating arthritis and joint pain, biosynthetic lubricants could address health issues that involve mucosal layers that are unable to localise water to a surface. This includes dry eyes, skin abrasions and inflammatory bowel disease.

Lawrence Bonassar, who is leading the work, says that “we hope that five years from now we’ve got great candidates for injectable treatments for arthritis”.
