APS recently submitted comments on the NIH’s proposed changes to peer review based off of a working group recommendation. The proposed changes would hide the numerical score a grant receives from relevant stakeholders.Under the new proposal, stakeholders would only know in which of three broad categories their application placed. This action would reduce transparency in funding decisions, and has the potential to introduce bias that cannot be identified. The RFI also did not disclose details about the working group that was tasked to develop this proposal. In the comment letter, APS asks NIH to disclose all supporting documentation related to the working group, including its membership, charge, and analysis, and to release scores to all relevant stakeholders.
