In Langley, British Columbia, there’s a village that may remind you of your own: you can go for a stroll, pick up a couple of items from the grocery store or even pop by the salon. But this particular community was purposefully built to allow for freedom and quality of life. Because every resident in this village has something in common: they’re all living with dementia.

Elroy Jespersen worked in senior living for nearly 30 years. During his career, he wondered about a better way to care for people living with dementia. And one man’s dream became reality after he co-founded The Village.

Modeled after living arrangements in the Netherlands and later, in New Zealand, this marks a new frontier among the care options for people with dementia.

It doesn’t come cheap, though. The average family will need to save more or find other options to afford the benefits of living in a home-away-from home. These Dutch-inspired designs approach $10,000 USD per month. Supplementing with long-term care benefits and wise investing and ample savings during their earning years, people with dementia will thrive in these settings. Families will enjoy peace of mind knowing loved ones are living with in a safe environment with some degree of normalcy.

The Village in Langley’s vision as noted in their About Us page on their website (Verve Senior Living, URL below) is to create “Resident-Centric” environments where seniors are inspired to experience fulfillment–whatever that means to them.
