Maryland Gov. Wes Moore on Wednesday signed legislation to regulate adult-use cannabis commerce, setting the stage for licensed sales of recreational marijuana to begin in the state on July 1. The measure, Senate Bill 516, was passed by state lawmakers in April after months of negotiation on issues including taxation and social equity. At a signing ceremony for the legislation on Wednesday, Moore said that the new law will “ensure that the rollout of recreational cannabis in our state drives opportunity in an equitable way.
“The criminalization of marijuana harmed low-income communities and communities of color in a profound way,” he added. “We want to make sure that the legalization of marijuana lifts those communities now in a profound way.”
