I’ve often asked myself the same question. CrossFit and its community have changed my life the way Quora and Medium have changed my creative presence in the world.

Here’s what I think about why CrossFit gets so much shade:

  • Ego — Some CrossFitters’ heads are so big that they can’t fit through the hanger-style doors of their gym. And that happens in gyms all around the world.
  • Competitive — Some CrossFitters get caught up in the competition and lose sight of why they joined the “box” (gym) in the first place.
  • Intense workouts — I think this is where the majority of said shade comes from. The prescribed daily workouts are, I’ll say it, sometimes, insane: They are brutal and intense. And I love it; they make me feel alive! However, I completely understand why some folks would be leery of these strenuous workout routines; if you aren’t careful, you can get hurt. And that’s a fact of life, no matter where you go.

I will continue to do CrossFit workouts until my hips or shoulders don’t work anymore. And here’s why:

  • How to save a life — I struggle with depression and anxiety a lot. Nothing else in the world (besides writing) has helped me through my divorce, like having my CF community and workouts to look forward to.
  • Hot-blooded — I’m in a bit of a dry spell as far as romance goes, so working out and expressing that pent-up sexual energy really helps me sleep at night.
  • When the levee breaks — When I’m all out of gas (every kind), broke, and overwhelmed with life, I go to the gym to break down those muscle fibers and come back stronger.
