The fastest-growing industry in the world must come to terms with its internalized misogyny. A recent civil lawsuit orbiting gender discrimination shows the weed and women reckoning has begun. In the suit, Los Angeles-based Toluca Lake Collective, a cultivator and storefront also known as Jungle Boys, was accused of gender discrimination among 17 total complaints by two former employees. One of the plaintiffs, Donna Rivadeneyra, alleges she was told “no women were allowed to work in the growing operations.” Rivadeneyra also alleges that she was told by management that she couldn’t become pregnant because she would lose her job. “The action will be defended in court on its merits,” a Jungle Boys spokesperson said to Leafly.
