A three-year-old boy named Kameron spent Memorial Day weekend with his family and went camping in Soap Lake, Grant County. On the way to the trip, Kameron brought his friend, a Triceratops plush toy named Dino. However, as the family drove through slow traffic on eastbound Interstate 90 near Snoqualmie Pass, Kameron accidentally dropped Dino out of the car. Everything happened too fast, and they couldn’t get Dino back.

Kids can be easily distracted, especially when the family was engaged in a lot of activities that weekend. Kameron temporarily forgot about Dino and enjoyed the camping trip. According to Haley Librande, the boy’s mother, Kameron, started to look for Dino when they got home. The green plush toy was Kameron’s sleeping companion for years, and he couldn’t sleep without it.

Thankfully, Dino wasn’t left on the streets alone and trampled by passing vehicles — two friends from Lynnwood were able to save the green plush toy. Carlyn Schmidgall and Megan Larson noticed Dino and picked him from the I-90 shoulder. Due to heavy traffic, Carlyn was able to momentarily get out of the car to get the plush toy.

“We thought, ‘Here’s probably some little kid in one of the cars up ahead who is upset and missing them,’” she said. Before they went on their trip to Ancient Lakes in Eastern Washington, they reported the missing stuff toy to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The agency was more than willing to help, and they knew the fastest method to find the owner. News spread fast on social media — WSDOT’s social media manager Mike Allende, posted the query on Facebook and Twitter.

“I knew that I could count on our audience to help spread the word,” he said. “Everybody’s looking for a good story.” And indeed, it went viral, and the post eventually reached the attention of Kameron’s mother. WSDOT’s post was shared by her friend and she immediately left a comment. As soon as Mike was notified of the engagement, he informed Haley about Dino’s rescuers. Soon enough, Haley came in contact with Caryln and Megan.
