Everyone goes through hard times in life, but some people are faced with more challenging circumstances than others.

After dropping out of school at a young age, Daryl Bidner was faced with addiction and homelessness. It wasn’t an easy path to be on and Bidner knew he wanted to get clean and make something out of his life.

According to Vancouver Island CTV News, Bidner made the difficult decision to stop using drugs and get clean and he did it one day at a time. Now, he’s been drug-free for over five years!

Of course, drug dependence was just one issue he experienced. Bidner also knew he needed secure housing and a way to make money. That’s when he decided to go to barber school and open his own shop.

As per the news station, Bidner was quite creative with hairstyles in high school and he’d often do his friends’ hair. He’d give people mohawks, buzz cuts, and fun colors. He knew he could re-create that in a professional way and make a living in the process and that’s exactly what he did.

After graduating school, he opened his own one-room shop: Little Barbershop of Horrors in Victoria, British Colombia. He named the shop after the musical, which he loved as a kid, and plays the 1986 movie Little Shop of Horrors on a flatscreen TV in the shop.

“I’m trying to keep growing. Trying to be the best person I can be,” Bidner said to the outlet. He does this by supporting local bands by playing their music in his shop and even offering free haircuts to people experiencing homelessness!

In fact, each month, Bidner goes to a nearby homeless shelter and offers free haircuts to everyone there. He knows what it’s like to be down and out and he’s doing his best to give back.

The world could use more people like Bidner who are willing to give back.
