It was a normal day of teaching third grade for Janiece Jenkins when she was suddenly faced with a life or death situation.
One of her students at the East Orange Community Charter School began choking on a water bottle cap and it was up to Jenkins to save his life.
Thankfully, she was able to successfully perform the Heimlich maneuver and the whole thing was caught on video!
Photo: YouTube/NJ.comIt all started when the third-grade student tried opening his water bottle with his teeth. He squeezed the bottle with the top in his mouth and the cap popped off and lodged in his throat.
The boy instantly grabbed his throat and ran to the front of the classroom, which is when Ms. Jenkins realized he needed help.

In an interview with NJ Advance Media, she said: “I didn’t really think, I just acted. I saw he needed help and I just sprung into action to help him. He couldn’t breathe, his face was pretty pale and he had a look of desperation on his face.”
Jenkins turned the student around and began doing the Heimlich maneuver. It worked and the student was able to breathe! According to the news outlet, Jenkins said that this was her first time doing the Heimlich maneuver on a real person. “I’m glad it worked,” she added.

Once the student’s airway was cleared, he was sent to the nurse. It’s terrifying to think of what might’ve happened if it hadn’t been for Jenkin’s quick action!
Her heroism was even acknowledged by Congressman Donald Payne in a tweet. He wrote: “I want to praise JaNiece Jenkins, a teacher at East Orange Community Charter School! When a student began to choke, she performed the Heimlich maneuver immediately and saved the student’s life. Jenkins is a true community hero!”
What an amazing teacher!
