In 2020, 27-year-old Cory Moses was paralyzed from the waist down after he got hit by a car.

The Brooklyn, New York man was meeting his then-partner on his bicycle when someone in a parked car opened a car door into him. This sent him flying into the street, where he then was hit by a car.

The accident left him with six fractured ribs, two broken arms and a fractured spine, which caused paralysis. Despite adding rods and screws to stabilize his back, the damage was so severe that doctors told him he would most likely never walk again.

Moses began rehabilitation, learning how to get around in a wheelchair. He also practiced on an exoskeleton program, with helps people with paralysis relearn how to walk.

Despite doctors telling him he’d never walk again, Moses set a goal for himself to be able to walk again before the one-year anniversary of the accident.

Miraculously, he achieved that!

This past October, Moses took his first steps on his own in his apartment.

“I remember feeling really proud of myself,” he told GMA. “It just reassured me that really having a strong mentality makes a difference.”

He continued his rehabilitation and has since progressed to being able to walk ten city blocks by himself!

Moses is working hard to achieve a new goal now: competing in the Paralympic Games in fencing.
