Life may be full of uncertainty, but we do what we can to make things happen the way we want them.

Colleen Gilbert, a mother of six, said, “I think everyone makes plans, and then, at a certain point, you say, ‘Hm, are those going to come true?’ And you just don’t know.”

Such is the story of Christine Gilbert and her mother, Colleen, who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer two years ago.

Christine Gilbert is single and did not have any plans to get married anytime soon, but knowing that one of her mother’s wishes is to see her get married, she came up with a plan to spend time with her mother by shopping for wedding dresses.

Christine also took it to the next level as she organized an intimate party for her mom.

“This is sure something that came up to me, especially since she’s been saying more and more, ‘I really want to see you married,’” Christine said.

Along with the rest of the family, the mother-daughter dressed up as if they were going to a real wedding, and Christine even booked a limousine for this very special day!

All dressed up and ready, they went to a local bridal shop, Kita Bridal in Edmonds, Washington. Colleen and Christine bonded over choosing a dress for her nonexistent wedding, and Kita Bridal’s owner, Krista Larrison, even hosted a private wedding dress party for the family for free.

Krista’s empathy for the family may stem from personal experience, as the owner personally had to take care of her own mother with dementia for eleven years. Krista said that sometimes you just have to show up for people.

This type of connection and generosity with strangers is rare to witness in these times, and it is wonderful to see how such a small act can aid the goal of a daughter to grant her ill mother’s wish.

The family shared both laughter and tears during the party and forgot about the cancer, however briefly that moment it was.

“It was great to lose ourselves in that for a day and truly just take ourselves on that wild fantastical journey. It’s very fun,” Christine said.

Colleen shares the same sentiment with her daughter and said, “When something like this that I thought was totally out of the question happens, it is very, very special.”
