As Mr. Rogers famously quoted, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'”
With all that’s going on in the world, particularly the Russian invasion of Ukraine, now more than ever it’s important to look for the helpers and the people making a difference.
One such “helper” is Ukrainian citizen Olga Nechyporchuk. Olga recently went viral for the way she’s contributing to helping the people of Ukraine. Each day, she goes to the Metro station in Lviv, Ukraine, and sits down at a piano outside.

She shared on Twitter that she goes to the station to play every day and later shared on Instagram that she’s been approached by hundreds of people so far.
In her post, she said (translated),”War is when you not only run around volunteer headquarters and refugee reception points, but find time for a piano…let’s remember that together we are a force! All optimism and faith in our victory!”
She plays the piano along with a Lviv local pianist named Alex. Alex said on Instagram, “Music is an international language, it unites people’s hearts regardless of gender, race, nation or worldview.”
He added that Ukrainians are against the war. He hopes that by playing the piano, they’re able to represent a glimmer of peace. The world could use peace, and music is a way to bring a semblance of that, even in the most chaotic situations.
While Olga and Alex have been playing music at the metro station since the war started, it was really Olga’s rendition of “What a Wonderful World” that caught the world’s attention. In fact, many people were moved to tears by the song playing at such a tremulous time.
One person commented, “It’s funny isn’t it… how you watch a week of horror, and then a little thing like this is what gets the tears flowing.” Another added, “This was the last straw tweet for me. Sobbed.”
