Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and shared her experience to help other patients along the way. Now, she’s helping the person closest to her handle her own diagnosis and treatment.
In an Instagram video, Roberts shared that her longtime partner, Amber Laign, was diagnosed with breast cancer late last year. She has already had surgery and was about to start chemotherapy the day of the video, but the prognosis is good. Roberts said the couple is grateful that their inner circle had kept the news quiet until Laign felt comfortable sharing her diagnosis.
Roberts is at the ready to support her longtime love, saying, “She and I have been together almost 17 years and have helped each other through our challenges, like my journey with cancer. It’s my turn now to be there for her as she was for me.”
That included the start of chemotherapy, which Roberts said she’d be attending rather than working on Good Morning America that morning. She said as Laign needs her throughout other phases of her treatment, she’d also be by her side, which will cause intermittent breaks from GMA.
She then took the opportunity to send a message to others experiencing similar struggles.
She said, “We know many, many are facing cancer and other challenges. Like my Momma said, ‘Everybody’s got something.’ Please know that you are in our prayers, and hopefully we’re in yours, too. Blessings to all.”
Roberts is no stranger to health difficulties. After being diagnosed with and successfully treated for early stage breast cancer in 2007, she later developed a rare blood disorder called MDS. This required a bone marrow transplant with donor cells coming from her sister Sally Ann. She had the transplant on September 20th, 2012, which she continues to celebrate each year as her “birthday.”
