Many of the world’s elite have faced scrutiny for not doing enough to help out with major world causes, like fighting world hunger and poverty.

Elon Musk, who is worth an estimated $233.6B, is one of those individuals, and late last year, he was put under the spotlight by the UN World Food Programme’s Executive Director, David Beasley.

According to a tweet by Dr. Eli David, Beasley claimed in a CNN article that just 2% of Elon Musk’s wealth could help solve world hunger in a big way.

Musk ended up replying to the tweet, saying:

“If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it.” He added that “it must be open source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent.”

Just weeks later in November of 2021, Beasley replied to Musk in a tweet, writing:

“@elonmusk, you asked for a clear plan & open books. Here it is! We’re ready to talk with you – and anyone else – who is serious about saving lives.”

According to a SEC filing, Musk sold 5,044,000 Tesla shares that same month and donated the profits, $5.74 billion, to an undisclosed charity.

According to FORTUNE, the UN’s WFP says it hasn’t received funding from Musk yet, but they’re excited to see Musk engaging in charitable donations. They said, “Whether WFP receives any of [Musk’s $5.6 billion donation] is yet to be seen, but I am excited to hear that Elon is engaged.”

CNBC reports that Musk estimated he’d pay over $11 billion in taxes for 2021, the largest tax bill in US history. A charitable donation would help reduce that tax bill while making a difference for the receiving charity.

Hopefully the money goes to make a massive difference for those in need!
