Long-Time Friends Start & Finish Breast Cancer Treatment Together

Laura Wong and Martha Maggard have been friends for 30 years, but were both shocked to see each other at Memorial Hermann Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

It turns out that the two women began their breast cancer treatment at the same time, and so it was only fitting that they ended their treatment together as well.

Last week, Wong and Maggard rang the bell together at the cancer center, celebrating the end of a long journey.

The two ladies met in 1991 when Wong began teaching at Johnson Elementary in Aldine and Maggard was the secretary. They became quick friends and kept in contact after Maggard retired.

When Maggard heard a familiar voice in the hospital, she and Wong were pleasantly surprised to see each other and couldn’t help but laugh.

They spent every day together after that, which brought them both comfort during a difficult time.

“I was really anxious and nervous. Every day, I would see Martha there. She was smiling and positive. It really helped me a lot. God put her there for me. He knew I was going to need somebody and there was Martha,” Wong told KHOU 11.

They are excited to move forward and enjoy their lives cancer-free, and of course will continue to keep in touch.
