A senior at Tara High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, knows how hard life can be sometimes. He recognizes the violence at his school and notices that there are a lot of students who have fallen into a depression.

James Robinson feels that it’s important to communicate with each other, and he knows that if he made a safe space for students to talk things out, that they’d be able to stop things from getting out of hand.

“There is a lot of students that have witnessed deaths, there is a lot of students where people are being abused, people going through a lot of trauma. I feel that this is the place where we need to start even as a freshman,” Robinson told WAFB9.

That’s when he created the “B Heard” club, where students from different grades meet three times a week to vent to each other about problems they’re going through. During these meetings, students are able to talk openly if they didn’t feel comfortable speaking to an adult.

“We go around asking people ‘Anybody having any at home problems? Anything they need help with at school?’ We don’t want to see someone in trouble, we ask ahead of time,” said Destiny Norris, member of the club.

Teachers volunteer to be moderators for the club, but give privacy to the students and show support only when they’re needed.

Robinson hopes this club will remind students that violence or taking the wrong path is not the answer, rather talking and asking for help can change their lives in a positive way.
