Love comes from the most unexpected places…
How these lyrics so sweetly describe the love story of Nicole McGrath and Cole Heinz, which blossomed in Antarctica.
It was a fascinating case of love at first sight when the two met at McMurdo Station, the biggest permanent human settlement in the coldest, driest, and windiest part of the world.

Built on the Hut Point Peninsula on Ross Island, the station has more than 80 buildings and also serves as a logistic hub of the U.S. Antarctic Program.
In summer, the station can accommodate more than 1,200 individuals, including construction, operations, logistics, and maintenance personnel. But only a quarter of that figure would usually work at the station during winter because of the extreme cold.

McGrath was so excited when she learned that she had been accepted to work as a dining attendant at McMurdo Station.
“Who gets to say they go to Antarctica?” McGrath told CNN Travel. “That’s just like something I’ve never even heard of. I’m from Florida originally, so I’d never even lived anywhere cold ever.”

But McGrath did not expect that she would find her true love at the research facility, since the station is mostly meant for scientific activities and round-the-clock personnel duties. Despite it all, McGrath and Heinz would find time to be alone together since meeting each other.
“I think what drew us to each other that first day was that we joked around a lot, and we made each other laugh,” said McGrath.

That first day was very memorable for the couple, because that was the time when McGrath jokingly answered that she was husband-hunting when Heinz asked her why she came to Antarctica.
The couple’s dates were also unforgettable. Outside the Antarctic research facility, the two felt enraptured by the rare beauty and serenity of the surroundings. They grew fond of penguin-spotting, watching out for whales and seals, and visiting historic places like the Discovery Hut.

When their time in Antarctica was over, McGrath and Heinz went on to share more adventures in New Zealand. They decided to try a long-distance love affair to find out if their feelings had been simply influenced by Antarctica’s magical realm.
Some more months passed b,y and, at last, while they were hiking in the Colorado canyons, Heinz made his marriage proposal. The two exchanged vows in 2017.
Today, McGrath and Heinz make up a blissful family with a daughter who shares their deep love for the Antarctic.
