There have been many different booms (and busts) in wellness from the charlatans of the early 1900s who sold the first snake oil. Today, more than ever before, there has been an increase in the number of new and innovative trends that focus on keeping your mind, body, and spirit strong.
Whether you’re a trendsetter or prefer to keep things simple when it comes to beauty routines and skincare rituals, here is a list of practical wellness trends that every person needs in their life right now:
Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR)
The term NSDR was coined by Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist, and professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. NSDR is, as it sounds, a way of resting without going all the way to sleep.
In his research, Huberman discovered that it enhances learning and memory, alleviates stress, improves cognitive capacity, and eases the transition to sleep. Very similar to Yoga Nidra, you can achieve this state by lying down and focusing on your breath to induce a state of calm.
Dry-Brushing
Dry brushing is a wonderful way to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Dry brushing is an ancient technique that involves using a natural bristle brush to stimulate the skin and encourage blood flow to the surface.
As the blood flow from the surface of the skin is what feeds your skin with nutrients and oxygen, dry brushing can be really beneficial for your skin. Dry brushing is said to promote the following:
- Improved blood flow and circulation,
- Better toxin removal,
- Reduction of cellulite and fat build-up,
- Improvement in skin texture,
- Reduction in acne and blemishes,
- Improvement in muscle soreness.
Dry brushing is believed to be beneficial for the whole body, not just the skin.
Dark Room Time
Dark Room Time is the practice of going into a completely dark room and sitting still to meditate. Inside the darkness, you are forced to concentrate on your breath and the sounds around you.
This gives you time to be still and away from the distraction of your phone or computer. Once the time is up, you can leave the darkness and return to your normal routine.
While DRDT is not a trend in itself, it is an element that can be added to other trends to make them even more effective. By finding some time each week to practice DRDT, you will find yourself more calm, focused, and less likely to suffer from anxiety or stress.
Conclusion
Wellness is about more than just beauty and skincare rituals. By incorporating the above three trends into your life, you will be caring for your mind, body, and spirit and making sure all of you — not just the surface of you — is in the best shape possible.
