Living to 100-years-old is a milestone many people aim to achieve. Not that many people survive to be 100, but three sisters in Kansas have surpassed that milestone and they did it together!

Frances Kompus celebrated her 100th birthday in November 2021. Turning 100 was worthy of a huge celebration in and of itself, but there was something extra special about the day Kompus turned 100: It meant she was joining her centenarian sisters, 102-year-old Lucy Pochop and 104-year-old Julia Kopriva.

Pochop and Kopriva attended Kompus’ special birthday bash, a day that meant they all lived to be centenarians.

Despite their ages, all three sisters are in great health and spend a lot of time together. In fact, Pochop and Kompus live on their own right next door to one another! Kopriva lives in an assisted living facility just a few blocks from her younger siblings.

Knowing that all three women lived to surpass the big 100 milestones, many people were curious about the girls’ upbringing, lifestyle, and secrets for longevity. Thankfully, they were more than happy to oblige the details of their lives.

The three siblings were raised on a farm in Kansas after their grandparents immigrated from Czechoslovakia to Rawlins County. Life was full of hard work, but the three sisters enjoyed each other’s company and the simple things in life.

The girls remember using horses and wagons to get around as their means of transportation and can vividly recall surviving the Great Depression from 1929-1933 and the Dust Bowl from 1930-1936. As per USA Today, one of the largest changes the girls experienced was in 1963 when the Rural Electrification Act brought electricity to their farm. With electricity, the family could have “freezers, refrigerators and small appliances, yard lights and electricity to read by,” Pochop explained.

According to KSN News, Kopriva said, “The younger generation don’t believe what we done went through. We work today, but we worked harder those days.”

The sisters credit their longevity largely to living a life full of hard work and good food. Their advice for younger folks is to walk often, pray a lot, and try to stay out of mischief. Even today, the sisters enjoy the simple things in life, like one another’s company.
